Ice cubes are made by cooling down water under the freezing point.
That sounds easy, doesn’t it? But how to get enough ice to cool down a bottle of bubbly? And how to cool down a bottle quickly? Read how to … cool down a bottle of sparkling wine.
You need minimum 500 gram ice to cool down a bottle of sparkling wine. Therefore you need space in the freezer.
I tested following ways to make ice cubes and rated them according to following:

Buying ice cubes in a supermarket or gas station ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Buying ice cubes is a fast and easy solution if you have a freezer at home where they can be stored. The smallest bag of ice cubes, i found, is 2 kg. For transportation a cooling bag is necessary. Else the ice melts on the way home.
The disadvantage of this method is that you find out that there is no more ice cubes left in the freezer when you need them. Who want’s to go shopping ice cubes if everything is ready for a cozy evening but the bottle. In addition a 2 kg bag takes room in the freezer.
Ice cube forms ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Do you know the plastic forms or bags that are filled with water to make ice cubes? They can be also used for making ice cubes. But one form/ bag is not enough ice for a bottle of bubbly. It should be minimum 500 g ice or 500 ml frozen water .
The plastic forms are a clean solution. I personally don’t like them. I have problem to get the ice cubes out of the form. It’s also a mess when I refill the forms with water and try to store them in the fridge. The lid that comes along with the form doesn’t help me. I think lids are super practical to store several forms on top of each other, but what shall i say…. the freezer takes a bath frequently. It’s a typical case of user error, I assume.
Overall plastic forms or bags for making ice cubes are a round thing that can also be square or have the form of a pineapple.
Ice cube machines ⭐⭐⭐
Ice cube machines can produce a portion of ice in a few minutes. They also work continiously what is necessary to cool a bottle of bubbly. The ice cubes made by a machine are just frozen and not very cold. Touch a fresh ice cube and it will melt very fast.
Water frozen in my freezer has a temperature of minus 18 degrees. It cools better and melts slower.
In my opinion ice cube machines are not hygienic. The machine has to be cleaned regularly, else germs will be in the container and pipes. Clever people might say that the ice cube is cooling the bottle and not the drink in the glass. That’s right, but you get in touch with meltwater and our hands are germ spins. That is scientifically proven. If you do not have my doubts then feel free to use an ice cube machine.
Food storage containers with lid ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My favourite solution. I like the ones best that are made of silicone and are foldable with a lid. I fill 2/3 of the container with water. Lid on top, then it goes into the freezer until the water is frozen. No swimming pool in the freezer that time. It is also very easy to get the ice block out of the container. Just fold it and the block can be taken out.
I have three containers (350 ml size) always in the icebox. That means I can use them at once if I need them. Two ice blocks are enough for one sparkling wine bottle. You can either use the complete ice blocks for cooling. They last longer and are ideal for keeping a cold bottle cold. Or you hit two ice blocks against each other and they break in smaller pieces. This cools down a bottle faster.
After emptying the containers I fill them immediately and freeze the water again. That’s why I always have ice in storage.
It’s also possible to use rigid storage containers made of plastic. But mine broke after some time.
Whatever food storage container you use, don’t fill them to the rim. You don’t get the ice cube out.
I also made the experience that containers over 500 ml are too big. You cannot break them into smaller pieces.
