Welcome to Pop or FLOP
Ratings are necessary to better understand a sparkling wine.
I chose a simple POP or FLOP rating system. Anything I want to see again is a POP. Else it’s a FLOP. What ticks my boxes you can read find in the sparkling wine cellar.
Don’t take ratings too serious. A sparkling wine is good if it tastes no matter what rating it has received! Your taste is important but stay informed.

Uhudler Secco – Thanks to the raging vine fretter
Mid of the 19th century vine fretter raged all over Europe. Grape phylloxera destroyed the vines. Therefore disease resistant North American vines were imported to Europe and used to produce wine. Many crossings, between native North American and European varietals were created at this time, one of them Uhudler.
We stumbled over the Weinperle during one of our bicycle tours down the Danube in Austria. It was love on first sip ❤️ For that reason an Uhudler secco made it in our sparkling wine basement.
Look
Beautiful red berrylike colour.
Smell
On the nose it has a vibrant and complex aroma of wild strawberry.
Taste
Wild rumours say that Uhulder has a so called Fox-ton. It reminds of wet fox fur. That doesn’t sound very delicious. And before you stop reading now, think about it… does that comparison makes sense? Hunters, not mere mortals, are usually dealing with foxes and why are the foxes wet? It’s hard to find even dry ones.
Fact is that Uhudler has a very uncommon taste and not everybody likes it.
The Weinperle tastes like wild strawberry sparkling wine. That is typically for the Uhudler grapes. The aftertaste is unique tart, dry and acid-stressed. The play between fruitiness, acidity and residual sugar is very refreshing and unique.
POP or Flop
A POP. Light and fruity drink that is best enjoyed with raw cured or dried meat products like Karrespeck, bacon or salami.
