Schales, Weisser Burgunder 2009 extra-trocken (extra dry)

Welcome to Pop or FLOP

Ratings are necessary to better understand a sparkling wine.
I chose a simple POP or FLOP rating system. Anything I want to see again is a POP. Else it’s a FLOP. What ticks my boxes you can read find in the sparkling wine cellar.

Don’t take ratings too serious. A sparkling wine is good if it tastes no matter what rating it has received! Your taste is important but stay informed.

🥂 Drink of the day: 21 October 2020

Today I have opened a bottle of Schales sparkling wine again. It is important to realize when it is enough with experiments and FLOP ratings. Time for known concepts.

Schales is a family winery. It is now in the eighth generation. Specialty of the house are sparkling wines with long maturation and fine perlage.

Schales is located in Rheinhessen. Flörsheim-Dalsheim is the record prize-winning wine village in Germany. s. Guinness Book of Records 1998. Additionally the vineyards are known for the basis of harmonious fruity wines.

I bought the bottle of sparkling wine, that I drink here, in 2017. Meanwhile, there is a generation with a disgorgement date end of 2019. The Pinot Blanc has been maturing in the bottle for over 10 years now.

Weisser Burgunder

Weissburgunder or Weisser Burgunder is the German, Austrian name for the Pinot blanc. It is a white burgundery grape. Don’t confuse it with Chardonnay (Blanc de Blanc). Pinot Blanc is a mutation of the Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder).

Fine moussex and straw coloured.

Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) smells almost neutral. The smell is generally very delicate and soft. Fruity smell of apples, pears, quinces and citrus fruits.

Der Schales, Weisser Burgunder, 2009 extratrocken (extra-dry) seems a bit neutral at first, but still elegant. The sparkling wine does not overwhelm, as e.g. the Kernersekt. But it has a rich body and is very well balanced. On the palate are floral aromas paired with fruitiness. The Sekt has the right sweetnesss.

Undeniably it has a super pleasant ripeness and is not a bit acidic. A perfect mix.

POP or Flop

POP. An all-rounder.

I love the Schales, Weisser Burgunder, 2009, extra-trocken (extra-dry). It proves that white sparkling wine can be different. It does not have to be specifically made from the usual champagne grapes.
